Our Youth Leadership program begins in early winter when applications are given to students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades in all county and city Schools. With student, parent or teacher confirmation, a panel reviews the applications and chooses the recipients. Tennessee Wesleyan College hosts the annual event in early March when these students are given newspaper recognition, a certificate and a Lamp of Learning medallion. Townsend Auditorium on TWC’s campus is filled with students, teachers and families!

In October, sixty 7th, 8th, and 9th graders spent a fantastic day of learning and fun at Tennessee Wesleyan College! These students were chosen for their leadership roles in the Athens City, Etowah City, and McMinn County public school systems and had been given certificates in a recognition ceremony earlier in the year.
On their arrival on campus, Dr. Steve Condon, president of the college greeted them; this was followed by a tour of the campus conducted by TWC students. Although a rainy day, the students and their leaders enjoyed the beautifully landscaped campus and learned more about the history and academic offerings of the college. Next, the students, who were “decked out” in tee shirts designed especially for this event, enjoyed a delicious lunch in Sherman Dining Hall.
After lunch, the students and their leaders attended abbreviated “college” classes. The three professors who conducted the classes were Dr. John Berch-Chemistry, Ms. Julie Jack-Fine Arts, and Donny Mayfield-Exercise Science; the students were thoroughly involved in the interactive classes. MCEF appreciates the talented, knowledgeable faculty who so willingly shared their time and expertise.
A very special thanks to the school leaders who came to TWC with the youth, to the participating MCEF board members, to the TWC faculty, staff, and students who always “believe” in youth, to Dr. Steve Condon for his inspirational words, to Nancy Perdue whose skills are essential to this program, and to Bob Perry for his extraordinary organizational skills that allowed the day to flow so smoothly.
